Van Persie tells Solskjaer to change Manchester United defensive tactic after Liverpool FC defeat

Robin van Persie has suggested Manchester United's defeat at Liverpool was self-inflicted, particularly the manner in which they allowed Virgil van Dijk to open the scoring at Anfield.

United fell behind to a Van Dijk header from a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner as the influential Dutchman was left up against youngster Brandon Williams in front of the Anfield Road end.

It seemed as though United were operating a zonal marking system, with Van Dijk admitting after the game that Liverpool targeted the smaller defenders from set peices.

And former striker Van Persie was critical of the new tactic, urging Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to revert to a man-marking system going foward.

Reviewing the game for the Premier League, Van Persie said: "I'm not the coach, but I really do think they should change their policy for defending corners.

"Because here Virgil [van Dijk] has a free run up, no-one really covering him. I think against the big guys you have to put big guys against him and let them battle it out. I do think that you have a better chance if you compete that way instead of zonal."

Van Persie also identified Anthony Martial's miss in the second half as the key moment which changed the game for United, after they created a period of pressure before Liverpool sealed the win through Mo Salah's late breakaway goal.

"United played well in the second half, so 2-0 is a bit harsh on them, but Liverpool created so many chances," Van Persie explained.

"The big moment for United was Martial's chance, which he created for himself; if he hits the target there, it's a goal 90 per cent of the time."
