Van 'obliterated' after being engulfed with flames in south Bristol 'explosion'

A fire which "obliterated" a van in Bishopsworth is believed to be deliberate.

Firefighters were called to Cutler Road at 6.47am yesterday (June 29), following reports of a van on fire.

A neighbour said he heard and felt the first "explosion" shortly before 7am.

He added: "I nearly dropped my coffee after the first boom. Then at about 7am, I heard another, less impressive bang.

"The owner of the van was busy moving other people's cars to make sure they weren't damaged.

"Firefighters were really quick to attend. I'd say literally within five minutes of the first explosion they were there, and it ended as quickly as it started."

The witness described the van as being "obliterated" despite the firefighters' quick arrival.

He said: "I'm just glad the owner and everyone else weren't hurt."

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said one crew from Bedminster fire station attended.

"On arrival, firefighters used one breathing apparatus for safety and one high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire," she said.

"The cause is thought to be deliberate. I can confirm there were no casualties."

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said: “We’re investigating an incident of criminal damage after a van was deliberately set on fire in Cutler Road, Bristol, at about 6.30am on Monday, June 29.

“We’re appealing for anyone with information about this incident to call us on 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5220142103.”
