Van Niekerk misses out on 200m-400m double, as Turkey's Guliyev takes 200m gold

Turkey's Ramil Guliyev has provided one of the shocks of the world athletics championships, beating South African superstar Wayde van Niekerk in the 200m final in London.

The final provided a suitably stunning conclusion to what had been a drama-filled competition.

Before the event, van Niekerk had been favourite to take the title vacated by the retiring Usain Bolt.

Bolt had tipped the South African could take over his mantle as the star of world athletics, and van Niekerk had completed the first half of the equation by winning the 400m final.

The 200m had been overshadowed by the story of Botswana's Isaac Makwala, who was stopped by organisers from running in the 200m heats and the 400m final after he came down with a stomach virus.

But he was cleared to race on Thursday (AEST), allowing him to race in an individual time-trial to set a time to reach the final.

In wet conditions, Makwala sped round the track to stop the clock at 20.20 seconds, then backed up in his semi-final two hours later in 20.14 seconds to finish second and advance to the final.

Van Niekerk had struggled through his semi-final, going through as a fastest qualifier by just 0.02 seconds, but he was still tipped to rebound to his best in the final.

In the final, Makwala brought the crowd to its feet as he led marginally going into the finishing straight.

But the Azerbaijan-born Guliyev was coming through on his shoulder, and over in lane three van Niekerk edged in front halfway down the straight.

Trinidad and Tobago's Kareem Richards came home with a rush in lane seven to take the bronze medal, but Guliyev pushed past the South African favourite in the final 50m to win in 20.09 seconds.

Van Niekerk was 0.02 seconds behind, with Richards home in 20.11, while Makwala faded to finish sixth in 20.44.
