Van Morrison's Freedom of Belfast award should be revoked says former Deputy Lord Mayor

The former Deputy Mayor of Belfast, has today called for Belfast City Council to revoke the Freedom of Belfast award for Van Morrison, due to his anti-lockdown songs.

The 'Brown Eyed Girl' singer was awarded the Freedom of Belfast back in 2013, which was celebrated with a free concert at the Waterfront Hall.

But Emmet McDonough-Brown, said that the East Belfast artist's recent lyrics "undermine the guidance in place to protect lives".

Writing on Twitter, the Alliance Councillor said: "Van Morrison was given the Freedom of Belfast - the highest honour the city can bestow. His most recent lyrics undermine the guidance in place to protect lives and are ignorant of established science as we grapple with #COVID19

"So I've asked @belfastcc to consider revoking it."

It comes as Van Morrison announced that he was set to release three new songs that protest against the coronavirus lockdown.

The Belfast-born musician accuses the government of "crooked facts" in one of the new tracks, which has not yet been released.

According to the BBC, "The new normal, is not normal," he sings. "We were born to be free".

The Brown Eyed Girl  singer has previously been criticised for comparing the deadly virus to "pseudoscience".

In response to the lockdown protest songs, NI Health Minister Robin Swann said the songs were "dangerous", adding that Mr Morrison would 'be better off singing songs about saving lives'.
