Van Gisbergen smashes qualifying record

Shane van Gisbergen's sensational start to the Supercars season has continued in Tasmania. (AAP)

Shane van Gisbergen has continued his golden Supercars form with his fourth poll position from six attempts this year for Saturday's race at Symmons Plains Raceway.

The Red Bull driver was the fastest across all three qualifying sessions with his 50.492 seconds lap time breaking the qualifying lap time record in the process.

Round three of the 2021 championship sees a newly implemented qualifying format, with the field split into two for each qualifying session and the top eight from each moving on to part two before battling it out for the top 10 spots.

In chilly but sunny conditions near Launceston, it was van Gisbergen who edged Repco's Cameron Waters by a third of a second in the final qualifying for the Tasmania SuperSprint.

"The guys have done a great job here and we struggled in qualifying in the cold temperatures at Sandown," van Gisbergen said.

"The tyres switched on then and it was awesome - the job's not done yet, no points but thanks to the team the car is fantastic.

"We haven't been here for a long time so trying some base stuff from back then and some new stuff, it's a bit funky.

"The cars is different to drive but really, really fast so hopefully it hangs on to its tires in the race."

Repco's Jack Smith finished in the top 10 in qualifying for the first time in his career.

Saturday's race from 4.25pm will comprise of 44 laps of the 2.41km circuit with a mix of slow and fast corners.

This weekend's event will also see the return of the fastest lap bonus points, which are awarded to drivers who set the quickest lap of the race at sprint events.

Championship leader van Gisbergen has won all five races so far this season and is aiming to continue his streak in Saturday's race, and then on Sunday in race seven of the 2021 campaign.
