Van Gaal explains why Angel Di Maria, Schweinsteiger and Falcao failed at Manchester United

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has given a variety of reasons as to why Angel Di Maria, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Radamel Falcao failed to make the grade at Old Trafford.

Di Maria became United's then record signing in 2014 and his arrival was followed by Radamel Falcao's from AS Monaco on transfer deadline day.

Falcao arrived on a season-long loan from the Ligue 1 club but United did have the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the campaign should they have desired.

However, both men were immense disappointments and left the club the following summer, with Di Maria signing for Paris Saint-Germain and Falcao moving to Chelsea on loan.

"Di Maria says it was my problem. I played him in every attacking position. You can check that. He never convinced me in any of those positions. He could not deal with the continuous pressure on the ball in the Premier League. That was his problem," said Van Gaal.

On Falcao, he added: "I wanted a first-class striker. I don't want to go through all the names but when you can't have the first or second choice, you have to be happy with the fourth or fifth, so Falcao came into the picture but we knew in advance he was injured. That is why I said we should take him on loan."

Schweinsteiger arrived at United from Bayern Munich the summer both Di Maria and Falcao left, and the German midfielder also flopped at Old Trafford.

"I brought Schweinsteiger in because we needed a captain on the pitch," Van Gaal said. "He didn't do it. He was injured. He had an excuse."
