Van found to be cloned and driver arrested in Little Lever

Greater Manchester Police traffic officers were involved in two road pursuits in the early hours of today (December 27) in Little Lever, Bolton.

It began as a routine observation of two vehicles and ended in a van being discovered to have been cloned and a driver being arrested for being disqualified.

A police tweet at 5.18am today said: "Sighted a Ford Transit in tandem with a silver Golf in Little Lever.

"Both vehicles made off. The Transit was abandoned and the occupants tried to get into the Golf.

"That too was pursued. It was abandoned off Market St.

"Driver detained. Van = Clone. Driver = Disq."

Car cloning is very much like identity theft, except it applies to cars instead of people.

In a nutshell, criminals steal a car or repair a written-off one, and give it the same identity of another legally registered car that fits the same description. This is done by changing the number plates to the same ones as the original car.
