Van explodes into flames and crashes into parked car on Scots street

This is the moment a van exploded before crashing into a another parked car in South Lanarkshire.

Emergency services raced to Broomieknowe Road in Rutherglen at around 6.30am on Friday after residents raised the alarm.

Shocking footage shows the motor up in flames as early morning commuters watched on in horror.

One eyewitness told how the van was engulfed in flames before it rolled down the hill into another car.

They told our sister title, Glasgow Live:"I was walking to get the 7:10am train from Rutherglen into work and saw smoke from Blairbeth Road, turned on to Broomieknowe Road to see the van on fire.

"As I got closer to the van it started to roll down the hill into a parked car.

"The explosion clearly startled everyone around.

"I heard someone shout 'phone an ambulance' just before I walked by the burning van, then after I walked by the van, an older man mentioned something about a battery in the van starting it.

"I'm not sure how he knew though."

Fire crews and police confirmed they attended the incident.

Police said that nobody was injured and that they found nothing to suggest that the incident should be treated as suspicious.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told the record: "At around 6:40am on Friday, September 11, police received a report of van on fire in Broomieknow Road, Rutherglen. 

"No-one was injured in the incident. 

"Enquiries have been carried out and there is nothing to indicate anything suspicious.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said:"We attended a report of a van on fire on Broomieknowe Road at 6:36am.

"One appliance was mobilised.

"There was one private van on fire."
