Van driver who killed girl, 15, when more than double drink-drive limit is jailed

A van driver double the drink-drive limit, who killed a schoolgirl, 15, when he smashed into a stationary car, has been jailed for seven years.

Georgia Mann, of Sittingbourne, Kent was travelling in the back of an Audi with pals when it ran out of fuel on a busy slip road and the driver went to get petrol.

She had remained inside the black A1 Sport when Benjamin Henley's white van ploughed into the back, causing catastrophic injuries.

Georgia was taken to a London hospital, but died two days later.

Henley, 45, was more than two-and-a-half times over the drink-drive limit at the time of the crash on the A249 in Kent in October 2018.

A woman in her 20s also sustained serious injuries while a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with chest injuries. Both have since recovered.

Henley, of Chatham, Kent, was sentenced to seven years in jail at at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday after admitting causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was also disqualified from driving for nine-and-a-half years and will have to take an extended retest to ever get behind the wheel again.

The driver of the Audi was charged with causing death by careless driving, but was acquitted following a trial.

Investigating officer Darren Chapman, of Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This sentencing has come nearly three years after the collision, and I want to commend the bravery and stoicism that Georgia’s family have displayed throughout court proceedings."

He added: "This was an awful incident in which a young girl lost her life and while no sentence will bring Georgia back, I hope the outcome provides some closure."

Georgia' family have since launched a new safety kit in a bid to prevent further tragedies - by urging people to get out of the vehicle if they break down.
