Van driver in his 50s has died at the scene of a crash involving HGV, police confirm

A van driver has died at the scene of a crash in Stanhope, police confirmed.

Durham Police were called just after 7.30pm on Monday morning to reports of a collision between two vehicles on the A689 between Stanhope and Eastgate.

The crash involved a Volkwagen Crafter van and a DAF HGV, it has been confirmed.

Sadly, the driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have said the man's family have been informed. A full road closure is currently in place whilst police carry out enquires into the incident.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called shortly after 7.30am this morning (August 8) to reports of a two vehicle collision on the A689 between Stanhope and Eastgate.

"It involved a Volkwagen Crafter van and a DAF HGV.

"Sadly, the driver of the van, a man in his 50s was pronounced dead at the scene - his family have been informed.

"A full road closure is currently in place whilst enquires are carried out.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Catherine Iley from the Collison Investigation Unit on 101 then extension 201940 quoting incident number 61 of August 8."
