Van driver 'clocked' gran sat in car so parked behind her and exposed himself

A van driver who exposed himself in a lay-by near a village school left a care worker in shock.

Dean Kew, of Abbeywood, Digmoor, Skelmersdale, near Wigan, 'clocked' the victim sat in her car at around 8.30am on August 9, whilst travelling through a village near Helsby, Cheshire.

He turned his van around and parked up behind her, on Manley Road, Manley, before walking in front of his vehicle while he unzipped his trousers, Chester Crown Court heard.

Kew, 53, exposed himself while facing the road. He did not pleasure himself, the hearing was told, CheshireLive reported.

The defendant was sentenced today (December 9) having been found guilty of indecent exposure by a jury during an earlier trial.

The victim was early for her shift on the day of the offence so had parked up in a lay-by near to Manley Village School.

She was on the phone to her son organising to look after her grandchildren at the time of the incident.

Mark Phillips, prosecuting, said she initially thought Kew "was going to go the toilet" when he exposed himself.

She asked her son what she should do and he told her to take down the registration number of the van and phone the police, the court heard.

Officers subsequently traced Kew and arrested him. He denied the offence.

Gareth Roberts, defending, said his client understood that he had been convicted of a "very serious offence".

He told the court: "He accepts the verdict of the jury albeit continues to protest his innocence."

Mr Roberts said Kew wished to apologise to his victim, stating: "It's a small step in him accepting he has done something wrong."

He added that the defendant had settled down in recent years, was leading "a productive life" and had the support of his partner.

Sentencing Kew, Judge Simon Berkson told him: "You are somebody who acted in an appalling fashion.

"A care worker, working during the pandemic, was waiting for her shift to start.

"You clocked her, to use your own phrase - a lone female in her car. You turned your van around.

"Your intention was to expose your penis. And that's exactly what you did. It shocked her.

"Since then you've denied this offending. She didn't expect anything like that to happen and nothing like that should happen to a lone female."

Kew was handed a two-year community order with a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement. He must carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

He was also placed on the sex offenders register for five years and ordered to contribute to the £500 prosecution costs.
