Van driver caught on rainy motorway with carpet slumped over windscreen

A van driver was pulled over by police after being spotted on the motorway with a soggy carpet roll obscuring their windscreen.

The motorist had been driving in heavy rain on the M56 in Greater Manchester yesterday evening.

Traffic officers from North West Motorway Police stopped the Peugeot and found that the carpet was not sufficiently secured, which they said presented a danger to other motorway users.

Images released by the force show the cargo loaded onto the roof of the van, slumped over the windscreen on the passenger side.

The driver told the officers who pulled him over: "It wasn’t like that when I set off".

Police handed them a PG9 – a vehicle prohibition notice.

Greater Manchester Police shared details of the incident on their social media, saying: “This vehicle was seen driving along the M56 in the pouring down rain.

“Load carried not only presented a danger to others, but reduced the drivers view of the road ahead.

“Driver stated ‘it wasn’t like that when I set off’. PG9 issued and driver reported.”

Commenting on the post, one Twitter user said: "Anyone who thinks that this is acceptable should not be behind the wheel and in control of a motor vehicle. Dangerous to all around."

Another added: "Wouldn’t like to have that carpet fitted in the house now".
