Van driver arrested on suspicion of drink driving after 13 people left injured in bus crash

A van driver was arrested after a serious crash left 12 bus passengers injured and the bus driver in hospital.

Emergency services were called to Rupert Road in Huyton at around 2.30pm on Friday to reports of a collision between a Stagecoach bus and a white Volkswagon Crafter.

The bus driver and 12 of his passengers suffered injuries in the crash, shortly before officers at the scene arrested the van driver on suspicion of drink driving .

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We are currently dealing with a collision on Rupert Road in Huyton between a van and a bus.

"The driver of the bus was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital for treatment to a back injury.

"Around 12 passengers also reported having suffered minor injuries in the collision, including neck and shoulder injuries.

"A man, who was the driver of the white van involved in the collision, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving."

A number of road closures were put in place around the scene but were lifted shortly before 6pm.

Fire crews were also called to the crash as pictures shows the front of a white van with significant damage after colliding with the back of the bus.

A spokesperson for  Merseyside Fire and Rescue  said: "Merseyside Fire and Rescue were alerted at 2.41pm and arrived on scene at 2.48pm to a two vehicle RTC between a van and bus.

"No persons were trapped. We are assessing the scene to make sure it is safe and standing by to assist."

Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have dashcam that could help police with their enquiries is asked to contact them via 101 or on social media.
