Van driver approaches three girls near Edinburgh school

Three Edinburgh schoolgirls ran off in fear after a van driver approached and stared intensely at them.

The girls were heading home when they were approached by the man next to Portobello High School at around 2.15pm on Friday.

One of the girls noticed a van drive past them before the driver decided to reverse back towards them, reports Edinburgh Live .

The driver, who is believed to have been in his 60s, then started to ‘stare intensely’ at the girls, causing them to run off in fear.

He is said to have had a small white dog on his lamp at the time of the incident.

A parent, who did not wish to be named, told Edinburgh Live : "When they arrived at our house my daughter hammered on the door shouting, "LET US IN!" and looked absolutely terrified.

"When they told me what happened I phoned the police on 999 and they immediately went to see if they could find the van before coming to our house, they arrived within 30 minutes."

She said a similar incident involving a man in a white van with dogs had been reported in the same area last year.

Police Scotland say they are now investigating the incident.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We are aware of the reports and our enquiries are ongoing.”
