Van Der Valk viewers confused by characters' 'cockney accents'

Fans have been left perplexed by one aspect of ITV’s Van Der Valk, expressing confusion over the accents featured in the show.

The series, a reboot of the original ITV thriller that started in 1972, stars Marc Warren in the title role as Dutch detective.

However, viewers were quick to point out his accent wasn't Dutch at all, with some expressing confusion over his use of a British accent.

“The biggest crime for me is that all these Dutch characters are speaking cockney," one viewer tweeted. "'It’s good ere init' were the opening words from this famous Dutch investigator.”

Another wrote: “I’m puzzled why the Netherlands police force only employs cockney detectives.”

“No classic theme? Okay, I can live with that. Cockney accents and stiff Dutch English? Hmm... I’ll give it a second chance,” wrote a third. “Classic cop show clichés and hugely predictable character tropes? It’s a no from me I’m afraid.”

However as fans of the original Van Der Valk will remember, retaining decidedly British accents was always a feature of the programme.

The drama previously starred Barry Foster, who kept his British accent for all five seasons.

The new ITV reboot is a three-part mini series of feature-length episodes.

It also stars Maimie McCoy, Elliot Barnes-Worrell and Luke Allen-Gale.

Van Der Valk airs weekly on ITV on Sundays at 8pm. Catch up on the ITV Hub.
