Van crushed on M8 after smashing into lorry in three hour tailbacks following serious crash

A large section of Scotland’s busiest motorway remains closed as emergency services deal with two serious accidents which are causing three hour delays.

Police were first called to the scene of a smash on the westbound carriageway of the M8 near Shotts in the early hours of Friday morning.

The road has been completely closed between Junction 4a and Junction 5 with drivers being urged to avoid the area.

Heavy tailbacks quickly began to build on the M8 (Traffic Scotland)

A second horror smash then took place shortly at 7.45am on the eastbound carriageway between Junction 6a and Junction 4, near Eurocentral.

A crushed traffic management truck has been pictured after smashing into the back of an HGV - with the front end and windscreen completely destroyed.

It is unknown if anyone has been injured in either collisions.

Traffic Scotland is warning drivers to steer clear of the M8 with three hour tailbacks reported.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: Officers are currently in attendance on the M8 near to junction 5 at Shotts following a road traffic incident.”

“Police were called to the scene at 4.05am on Friday, 2 October.

“The road is currently closed in both directions between junction 4 and junction 5.

“Emergency services remain at the scene and drivers are asked to avoid the area, where possible.”

Of the second crash, they added: “Officers are currently dealing with a second crash involving two vehicles on the M8 eastbound at junction 6A, which happened around 7.45am on Friday, 2 October, 2020.

“Emergency services are currently in attendance and Officers are working to alleviate the traffic and turn motorists around.

“Drivers are thanked for the patience while enquiries are ongoing.”

No information is currently available about injuries sustained during either of the crashes.
