Vampire Hunter Van Helsing Almost Made Cameo in Dracula Film

The Last Voyage of the Demeter almost featured a Van Helsing cameo.

In a world filled with vampires, werewolves, and all things that go bump in the night, it's not often that we come across a fresh and intriguing take on Bram Stoker's legendary tale of Dracula. But in 2023, director André Øvredal gave it his best shot with 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter.' This horror-thriller, adapted from the iconic 'The Captain's Log' chapter from Stoker's novel, took audiences on a spine-chilling journey aboard the titular merchant ship as it unknowingly transported the infamous vampire from Transylvania to England.

After almost two decades in development hell, 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' finally hit the big screen, albeit to mixed reviews and a box office performance that fell just short of its production budget. But with the movie leaving audiences hanging on a tantalizing cliffhanger, screenwriter Bragi F. Schut recently revealed an intriguing tidbit: the possibility of a Van Helsing cameo.

In an interview with SYFY Wire, Schut shared that there was an alternate ending in consideration, one that would have seen Corey Hawkins' character, Clemens, meeting the legendary vampire hunter, Van Helsing. Picture it: a shadowy figure appearing in a tavern, approaching Clemens and showing an uncanny knowledge of his experiences aboard the ship. This stranger would reveal himself to be none other than Van Helsing, setting the stage for a potential rematch between Clemens and Dracula.

Now, Van Helsing is no stranger to Dracula adaptations. From the iconic portrayals of Edward Van Sloan and Peter Cushing to Hugh Jackman's spin on the legendary character, Van Helsing has played a pivotal role in many iterations of the story. Some have explored his descendants, like the SYFY show centered around his great-great-great-granddaughter. So, including Van Helsing in 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' would have been a fascinating twist and a possible avenue for a sequel, had the movie fared better.

But with the movie's ending already serving as a set-up for a climactic confrontation between Clemens and Dracula, including Van Helsing might have risked complicating an already ambitious narrative. Øvredal himself acknowledged that a sequel would require revising the source material and going in a different direction, yet he remained open to the idea.

While the inclusion of the legendary vampire hunter might have been a double-edged sword, it's worth noting that 2023 hasn't been the best year for Dracula adaptations. Nicolas Cage's quirky take on Renfield was also met with mixed reviews and flopped at the box office. So, perhaps sticking to the core story with 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' was the safer bet.

As we await news of a potential sequel or any future Dracula adaptations, let's appreciate the creativity and audacity behind André Øvredal's vision. 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' may not have reached the heights of Dracula's legendary status, but it's certainly left a lingering sense of curiosity and a thirst for more blood-soaked tales.

So, whether you're a die-hard vampire aficionado or just looking for an exhilarating horror flick, 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' offers a unique take on a classic tale. Sit back, turn down the lights, and prepare for a spine-tingling journey you won't soon forget.
