Value retailer QD Stores closing shop in Welsh town

A discounter has announced its store in Wrexham is closing due to falling footfall in the town.

Value retailer QD Stores (QualityDiscounts.com) has announced said its shop on Hope Street will shut in May.

It is another blow to the town centre's retail sector.

Karl Ottolangui, associate director at QD, said: “We are very sad indeed to be making this announcement.

"QD has been part of the retail landscape in Wrexham for the past 10 years and our store has built up a very loyal customer base. We’d like to say thank you to all of them for choosing to shop with us in the town.

“Our staff too have been an enormous asset and we will be doing all we can to help every one of them find alternative employment in the area.

"Decisions to close stores are not taken easily and in no way reflect the hard work undertaken by our valued staff, in fact quite the opposite.”

QD says that a combination of factors has led to their decision.

Mr Ottolangui added: "A key reason for our decision was the noticeable decline in footfall within the centre of Wrexham, with a decreasing number of retailers attracting people to the town centre.

"This has had an understandable impact on our trading figures.

"Despite the challenging conditions for retail on the High Street, QD has bucked the trend and continues to open stores, with the company adding a number of new stores to the chain last year and further new openings planned for 2020."
