Trading up into the first round is a good possibility for the Chiefs in the 2019 draft.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach was quite selective in the 2018 NFL draft, using his eight picks to move around and make a total of six selections. The Chiefs traded up a total of three times in order to select Breeland Speaks, Derrick Nnadi, and Kahlil McKenzie. They also acquired pick No. 100 in the Breeland Speaks trade which was used on Dorian O’Daniel.
In order to trade up, Kansas City will need to give up some draft capital. To get a better idea of which picks the Chiefs might surrender in trade, and what each pick is worth, we can reference the trade value chart.

Here are the individual values of the Chiefs’ draft picks this year per our trade value chart:
Round 1, pick 29: 640
Round 2, pick 61: 292
Round 2, pick 63: 276
Round 3, pick 92: 132
Round 5, pick 167: 24.2
Round 6, pick 201: 10.6
Round 6, pick 214: 5.4
Round 7, pick 216: 4.6
Total value: 1,384.8
The Chiefs have a first round pick which significantly increases the total value of their picks. In 2018 the Chiefs didn’t have a first round pick. Their top was pick No. 54, and it held a value of 360. They actually ended up trading it away in order to move up for Breeland Speaks. So it’s entirely possible the Chiefs use that first round pick to make a move during this draft.
Hypothetical trade:
Say the Chiefs wanted to move up in the first round to pick No. 21 where the Seahawks are currently slated to pick. The total value of pick No. 21 is 800 points. So the Chiefs would need roughly a total 160 points on top of their first round pick to move up to that slot. The Chiefs could trade the Seahawks a package of picks including No. 29, No. 92, No. 167 and No. 216 (800.8 total value).
This example wouldn’t hamstring the Chiefs too badly with a total of three picks in the top-100, but they would only have a total of five selections without trading down. Keep in mind teams will also deal in future picks in order to move around in the draft.
