Billionaire who looked at Newcastle United says Premier League asking price are 'a bit silly'

The prices put on Premier League clubs are "a bit silly", according to Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The billionaire, who is said to be worth over £21bn, feels the asking prices for any potential buyer of an English top-flight club are unrealistic.

Last year his brother, Bob Ratcliffe, chief executive of INEOS Football confirmed they looked at buying Newcastle United from Mike Ashley but decided against it due to the price.

Sir Jim said: "(It's) pretty difficult to rationalise purchases in the Premier League at this time for us and then, if you look below the top six, they're all £150m and above and you're going to write a cheque for £50m and get in the 'Everton Cup'.

"Obviously people talked to us about Newcastle as well. But again you come back to a valuation in the hundreds of millions and it's very difficult to contemplate."

Ineos settled on Ligue One side Nice, and Sir Jim, for now, has ruled any further additions to the company's portfolio.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "We are very comfortable with where we are with Nice actually.

"It's going quite well, it's been quite interesting, we are still learning and it is quite a challenging league in France with some very talented players."

Asked what he will add next, Sir Jim said: "Nothing. I think that is quite sufficient at the moment, it is quite a platform.

"We will see whether they can benefit from each other in certain ways, but I think that is quite enough challenges for Ineos at the moment, honestly."
