Valtteri Bottas escapes dramatic crash as he smashes into wall in Mexican Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas was fortunate to walk away from his wrecked Mercedes after he smashed into a wall during qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix.

The Finnish F1 driver was going into the final turn when he clipped the wall before ploughing into a barrier and coming to a sudden stop.

Bottas was immediately asked if he was OK over the radio and replied that he was, although appeared to be breathing heavily.

He eventually walked free of the wrecked Mercedes and was taken to the medical room, after being winded in the crash.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen took pole position for the Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday, while Bottas qualified in sixith.

Verstappen said: "To come out on top is incredible! A huge thank you to the team, they worked very hard. We showed today that we are very quick."
