Valleys streets left inches deep in mud and silt after Storm Dennis

A town in the Valleys has been left inches deep in silt after heavy flooding from Storm Dennis.

A clear-up operation has been under way since the early hours of Sunday in Pentre, near Treorchy, after a blocked culvert saw houses submerged in water.

Heavy rainfall from Storm Dennis, which has now been declared a "major incident" by police, caused major flooding and led to rivers busting their banks.

You can follow our live updates of the widespread damage and clear-up operation here.

In Pentre emergency services have working around the clock with heavy machinery and diggers to remove silt and mud left by floodwater.

David Roderick, 69, said: "We were warned about 1.30am but there was hardly anything then.

"It just started coming up as far as the kerb and the top of the car wheels.

"By the time 2.30am came it was all the way through the house, all the ground floor up to the first step.

"We just stayed upstairs and the fire service came about 3am.

"We just couldn't do anything. When it's coming in from the front and back of the building you have no control."

The dad-of-three said while the flood water has been pumped out by fire engines around three or four inches of silt and mud remained in Lewis Street.

He said: "All the water is gone other than the mud. Two streets away they had a JCB taking away the slurry.

"It's the ones without insurance I have concerns about. You have neighbours who haven't got insurance.

"We have lots of helpers here pulling up carpets, trying to get it drier than what it was."

Over in Mountain Ash and Fernhill streets remain underwater while others are blocked by remaining debris.

In a tweet  Rhondda Cynon Taf Council leader Andrew Morgan said RCT had been "very badly affected".

The council has set up rest centres for those affected in Sobell Leisure Centre, Aberdare, Hawthorn Leisure Centre, Llantrisant Leisure Centre and Rhondda Sports Centre.

Cllr Morgan said: "Have just sat in to hear the latest Multi Agency meeting, huge response from all services but the scale of this flood event is massive! Have also just spoken with the First Minister, it’s clear RCT has been very badly affected.

"Please stay safe, do not drive unless necessary."
