Valencia say they were forced to play after Mouctar Diakhaby accuses Cadiz's Cala of racism

Valencia's players walked off the pitch after defender Mouctar Diakhaby accused Cadiz's Juan Cala of racism during Sunday's clash in La Liga, but they were soon forced back onto the pitch.

Diakhaby approached Cala after a comment was aimed in his direction shortly after the half hour mark of the game, with the centre-back then approaching referee David Medie after remonstrating with Cala.

After a brief period off the pitch the players soon returned.

Valencia's official club Twitter account tweeted: "No to racism.

"The team have held a meeting and decided to continue the game, in order to fight for the honour of the club, but denounce racism of any kind."

In a separate tweet they added: "We offer our complete backing to Diakhaby.

"The player, who had received a racial insult, requested that his teammates return to the pitch. We support you Mouctar."

After the match, which Cadiz won 2-1, Valencia defender Jose Gaya said, via AFP: "He told us he insulted him in a racist way.

"We went back out to play because they told us they could penalise us with three points and something more. He asked us to go back, he's gutted, it was a very ugly insult."

Valencia boss Javi Gracia added: "While we were in the dressing room we were told we could potentially be sanctioned if we didn't return, so we spoke to Diakhaby about it, he said he was not able to play but understood we needed to return to play rather than be sanctioned."

The clash stood at 1-1 just after the half hour mark when Diakhaby was defending a free-kick sent in to the Valencia box, which was caught by goalkeeper Jaume.

Then as Diakhaby left the penalty area along with Cala, who he was marking, the former Cardiff City defender appeared to shout something towards the centre-back.

Diakhaby then ignored the game that was going on around him and ran towards Cala, eventually confronting him in the centre of the pitch.

He was booked for the confrontation and then, as he was surrounded by his Valencia teammates, he led them off the pitch.

Cala could be seen chatting to his manager Alvaro Cervera, who appeared to be asking the defender what was said.

The match resumed after a short break, but Diakhaby did not continue as he was replaced by Hugo Guillamon.
