Vale of Leven set to host first walking football tournament at Argyll Park

Competition will be strong, but fun will also be on the agenda as an established sports club take the final steps in preparation for their first ever tournament.

Vale of Leven Walking Football Club are staging a charity event in Argyll Park astro this Sunday, October 17.

And they hope to boost the coffers of cancer treatment centre the Beatson in Glasgow which is a cause very close to the club’s heart through the eagerly anticipated event.

There are eight teams taking part: two from Vale of Leven, Pollok and Giffnock, St James from Dundee, Townhead Strollers from Ayrshire, Chesser Hawkes from Edinburgh and Endrick old Crocks.

The tournament is a group-stage format with two sections.

Then all teams will enter a knock-out phase with the top two in each group playing for the trophy and the bottom two from each group playing for the plate.

Organiser Stephen Lang is excited about the event and is hopeful it will be a big success.

He said: ‘We are all looking forward to the tournament especially as it is our first attempt at hosting such an event.

“We are raising money for the Beatson Cancer charity and hope to raise £1,000 between the tournament, raffle and our JustGiving page. So any donations would be very much appreciated.

“We picked the Beatson Cancer charity because it’s a very worthwhile charity and they do a wonderful job. And at least one of our players have had treatment at the Beatson.”

The Vale of Leven players are totally buzzing about being back playing again after the Covid enforced break which has been a very testing time for everyone.

Stephen said: “It’s great to be back playing again after Covid put a stop to our sessions for several months.

“Thankfully we’ve been back since April although that was with limited numbers due to government guidelines.

“A couple of the guys have had a few games of tennis and rounds of golf since restrictions eased.

“We have between 30 and 40 players split between our sessions at Argyll Park astro on Monday and Thursday evenings 7.45pm until 9pm with the cost just £4 per session. “

active.
