Vale master blender receives royal honour for services to whisky

A master blender from Alexandria has been awarded an OBE for his service to the Scotch whisky industry in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

Dr Jim Beveridge, who has worked with Diageo for almost four decades, is only the sixth person in almost 200 years to hold the role of master blender at the group - with the first being founder John Walker himself.

It’s far from the only recognition that Dr Beveridge has received either, having been named Master Blender of the Year in two consecutive years by the International Whisky Federation, and being inducted into the World Whisky Hall of Fame in 2015.

Speaking about the award Dr Beveridge said: “I am honoured to accept this award on behalf of everyone who contributes to making Johnnie Walker. It is a team effort by all the women and men who work in our distilleries across Scotland. We believe we are the custodians of our brand, standing on the shoulders of the giants who went before us.”

Diageo chief executive Ivan Menezes, added: “This is a proud day for Jim but also for Johnnie Walker and Diageo. Jim epitomises everything that makes Johnnie Walker and Scotch whisky great. He is dedicated to his craft and passionate about the quality of his product.”
