Vakoun Bayo Celtic future clue as Ange Postecoglou must wait to run rule over flop striker after Olympics call-up

Vakoun Issouf Bayo has been allowed to be called up to the Ivory Coast Olympic team — potentially putting paid to any idea of a Celtic revival.

The striker was sent on loan to Toulouse last season and managed a respectable 10-goal return from 30 appearances in Ligue 2.

Toulouse did have an option to buy the 24-year-old, but declined to exercise it as it remains too expensive while the club are stuck in the second tier.

That made fans wonder if he still had a part to play in green and white but his inclusion in the squad for Tokyo 2020 makes it seem unlikely he'll be playing a significant role at Parkhead, at least not in the near future.

With the Olympic tournament running from July 23 to August 8 he'd miss the second and third qualifying rounds of the Champions League and the opening two weeks of the Premiership season at least.

That's the likely reason Odsonne Edouard at the Hoops and also Ianis Hagi across the city at Rangers have not been called up to the France and Romania squads for Tokyo 2020.

The Olympics, for all the prestige, isn't an official FIFA tournament and as such there is no obligation for clubs to release players.

It's not too late for Celtic to pull the plug as two members of the Romania squad this week were forced to withdraw despite one already arriving in Bucharest.

But it hints that they don't see Bayo fitting into Ange Postecoglou's style of play if they're happy to let him travel to the Far East instead of taking part in pre-season and some big matches.
