Vain politicians spend £460,000 of taxpayers' cash on paintings - mostly of themselves

MPs and former ministers have spent £460,000 of taxpayers' cash on paintings - mostly of themselves - since 2010.

Commons Speaker John Bercow's portrait cost £22,000 plus another £15,000 for the frame and coat of arms to go with it.

Former Lib Dem Deputy PM Nick Clegg had his portrait painted in 2017 at a cost of £3,600.

Labour's Diane Abbott , Tories Ken Clarke and Michael Howard and ex-PM Tony Blair have also been pictured. Former Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett had an £11,750 portrait in 2011, says the TaxPayers' Alliance.

Alliance spokesman James Roberts said: "The odd painting of a PM or bust of a national treasure seems fair enough.

This portrait cost £22,000 (PA)

"But with costs for the last five years clocking in at double a decade ago, money is being wasted." But a Commons source said: "Value for money remains a key consideration when buying works of art."
