VADODARA: The special operations group (SOG) of the Panchmahal district police made yet another seizure of scrapped currency notes. Demonetised currency with a face value Rs 97.5 lakh was seized near a village in Morva taluka of the district.
SOG sleuths had received a tip-off regarding the movement of the currency on Monday. They were told by an informer that scrapped currency was being taken towards Morva in a van.
The policemen spotted the van when they were keeping a watch near the Rampur village in Morva taluka. The van was stopped and six persons sitting in it were held. On checking the vehicle, the police found scrapped currency notes of Rs 97.5lakh in the car in plastic bags.
SOG police inspector M K Khant said that they had received incomplete names of the persons who sent the notes and the one who was supposed to receive them.“We are checking call details of the accused to ascertain who they were in touch with,” said Khant.
Since 2020, a series of seizures of the demonetised currency was made in Godhra and surrounding areas in Panchmahal district. The biggest seizure was by the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) which seized notes with a face value of Rs 4.76 crore in July 2020.
Three other smaller seizures were made in 2020. Last year, a seizure of scrapped currency notes worth Rs 48.8 lakh was made near Godhra in August 2021.
