Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s to decide on compensation

VADODARA: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s (VMC) administration has sought the nod of the standing committee to pay compensation to the victims of a house collapse in the Bavamanpura locality near Panigate on September 29,2020.

The collapse had left three persons dead and one injured. The State Human Rights Commission had ordered VMC to pay compensation.

The building had collapsed when the construction was nearing completion. While its owners had not started staying in it, a two-wheeler service station had been started on the ground floor. Labourers working for the contractor who had constructed the building, however, used to sleep there in the night. Three of the workers were killed in the accident.

An offence was registered but the contractor and the families of the labourers reached a compromise. A compensation of Rs one lakh was paid to the kin of each of the deceased while Rs 50,000 was paid to the injured. Later, an additional compensation of Rs one lakh each was paid to kin of deceased as a settlement in connection with a petition filed in the Gujarat high court. SHRC also took cognizance of the matter and ordered VMC to compensate the victims.
