AHMEDABAD: CID crime on Thursday booked a 29-year-old man for allegedly furnishing false details about his brother to take out a life insurance policy of Rs 22 lakh. He then made a claim for the money just 21 days after getting his brother insured.
According to the FIR filed by the legal advisor of the insurance company, Ajinkya Deshmukh, Karan Bheel, a resident of Nagarwada in Vadodara, on October 30, 2020, took out a life insurance policy for his elder brother, Bhailal Bheel, and paid the first premium of Rs 3,060 for the policy of Rs 22 lakh. The policy terms state that the policyholder must supply details of medical conditions and disclose if he or she is addicted to liquor or tobacco.
“Karan, posing as Bhailal Bheel, filled the details in and made no mention of Bhailal’s liver cirrhosis. Karan made himself the nominee for his brother’s policy,” the FIR states.
Deshmukh in the FIR said Karan submitted a claim on January 16, 2021, saying that his brother died on November 20, 2021.
As the policy holder died a short while after taking out the policy, the insurance company began an investigation by two private detectives and found that Bhailal had been suffering from liver cirrhosis, which was not mentioned on the policy form.
Bhailal was also an alcoholic which worsened his condition and when Karan took the policy, he was already on his death bed, the FIR states. Based on the investigation, Deshmukh approached police and filed a complaint of breach of trust, cheating, forgery and producing forged documents as genuine against Karan and began an investigation.
