Vachik Mangassarian dead: Agents of SHIELD character actor dies aged 78

Vachik Mangassarian has has died at the age of 78, his talent management reps have confirmed.

The character actor has dozens of credits to his name, including Agents of SHIELD, Curb Your Enthusiasm, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and NCIS.

He died on Saturday in Burbank, Los Angeles, from Covid-19-related complications, according to his manager Valerie McCaffrey of McCaffrey Talent Management.

Vachik was born in Iran of Armenian descent and moved to the US at the age of 23.

He had roles in several Iranian productions before landing his first role in Hollywood when he starred in The South's Shark in 1978.

He began getting more guest appearances by the mid-1980s, starring on shows such at The Fall Guy, The A-Team and Murder, She Wrote.

His career continued into the 2010s when he appeared on series including Falcon Crest, Jake and the Fatmas, NYPD Blue and JAG as well as a host of telefilms.

In 2008, he landed a big part in The Stoning of Soraya M, where the played he role of the dad of a young woman who had been sentenced to death amid false charges. He starred alongside the likes of Jim Caviezel.

He was also instrumental in getting the script for Lost and Found in Armenia produced into a movie and released into theatres in 2012.

The film starred Angela Sharafyan and Jamie Kennedy and was the first time in Armenian cinematic history that Armenian and American actors had performed in same feature.

Vachik most recently completed a supporting role in Paul Weitz’s new film Moving On, which starred Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.

Following the news of his death breaking, fans took to social media with messages of condolences.

One user on Twitter wrote: "R.I.P. ACTOR Vachik Mangassarian. YOU WILL BE MISSED."

Another commented: "Goodbye to Vachik Mangassarian, an Iranian actor based in Hollywood since the early 1980s. He did a lot of TV (AGENTS OF SHIELD, THE A-TEAM, REMINGTON STEELE, NCSIS LOS ANGELES...) and some cinema (THE TRUTH OF SORAYA M., VERY RISKY LIES...). Rest in peace."

Vachik is survived by his two sisters, Linda Lalaian and Elda Hacopian and their spouses; nephews Derek Hacopian and Ara Hacopian and niece Aida Hacopian.
