Vaccine trials leave Mirror readers hopeful but no normality expected until 2022

Successful vaccine trials have many of us feeling more optimistic, according to our latest survey.

We received 10,111 responses on the Mirror website with people’s views on a potential vaccine for Covid-19.

The breakthrough - which has seen two trials report vaccines that are at least 90% effective, and a third trial also showing positive results - has made 58% of those who responded feel more optimistic about the pandemic.

For nearly two-fifths (37%) it hasn’t changed how they feel, while 6% say they now feel less optimistic.

Levels of optimism among respondents on the Mirror website are lower than the 58% feeling more optimistic as a result of vaccine breakthroughs across regional and national titles in the Reach network.

In terms of who should be top priority to get the vaccine, 86% of respondents agreed NHS and care workers should be among the first.

Other groups that people thought should be prioritised were care home residents (63%), over 80s (41%) and over 70s (41%), and younger adults with health conditions (33%).

Fewer people thought teachers (32%), children with health conditions (32%), over 60s (29%), public transport workers (23%), supermarket workers (21%), over 50s (12%), and delivery drivers (8%).

However, if a rollout is successful, most don’t think it’s going to see the country get back to normal quickly.

Only one in six (17%) of those who responded think things will be back to normal by Spring next year.

Nearly two in five (38%) think it will take until Autumn next year, while 45% think 2022 is the most likely.

Nationally, 21% think things will be back to normal by Spring next year, 36% think it will take until Autumn next year, while 42% think 2022 is the most likely.
