Covid vaccine travel certs to be issued in Ireland from next week, Eamon Ryan confirms

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has said the EU digital cert required for international travel will begin to be issued to 1.8 million people from next week.

People who have received their vaccines via the HSE are expected to receive their vaccine cert through email.

If a person received their vaccine through a GP or a pharmacy, they will receive a letter in the post.

Each letter is expected to have a code that can be scanned onto a smartphone.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Minister Ryan said: “Next week they’ll start to be issued by email and by post and for everyone that needs it for international travel before July 19.”

Minister Ryan also said 91,000 people flew out of Dublin Airport last week. That figure, he said, is down 85% to pre-Covid-19 levels.

The Green Party leader said the Digital Covid Cert for travel is very specific in terms of EU programming and mechanisms and it’s likely the government will “address the hospitality issue in its own way".

It comes after hospitality chiefs are consulting with their members over the use of a self-regulatory vaccine cert to get indoor dining up and running for people who have been fully vaccinated and or have recovered from Covid-19 in the last nine months.

It’s understood this vaccine cert would be a piece of paper that could also have a code to prove an individual’s vaccination or Covid-19 status.

It comes as Minister for Health Stephen Donnolly confirmed that people aged 30 to 34 will be able to register for their Covid vaccine on Wednesday through the online portal.

The portal will open to the age group two days earlier than expected as the government accelerates the vaccine roll-out due to concerns over the spread of the Delta variant.

The registration will begin with people aged 34 allowed to register on Wednesday, July 6, followed by people aged 33 on Thursday, those aged 32 on Friday and so on.

Minister Donnelly has said that appointments to receive the jab for this age group will likely begin as soon as next week.
