Vaccine passport decision expected 'within months', Chancellor Rishi Sunak says

The issue of vaccine passports is one which is beset with complex moral and legal considerations, but it could pave the way out of the coronavirus pandemic and for more normal life to return.

Senior government minister Michael Gove is currently leading a review into the possible use of vaccine passports to access currently closed venues, such as pubs and theatres.

And latest figures released at the weekend showed that more than 19 million people in the UK have received first doses of Covid-19 vaccines since the roll out began.

Asked on the BBC One's Andrew Marr programme about vaccine passports on Sunday morning, the Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the government should reach its conclusion on passports in "a few months' time."

He acknowledged there are challenges with the proposal and told The Andrew Marr Show on the BBC: “Obviously it’s a complicated but potentially very relevant question for helping us reopen, particularly those parts of our country like mass events.

“That’s what the committee and the review will do, is work through all of those questions and come to a view in a few months’ time.”

Announcing his roadmap out of England's national lockdown last Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that Michael Gove will lead a review into the possible use of vaccine passports to access currently closed venues, such as pubs and theatres.

Separately, scientists from the Royal Society said vaccine passports for foreign holidays are “feasible” but a lack of a set standards across countries means they cannot be introduced yet.

They stressed a "broader discussion" was needed, such as the need for legal and ethical standards, along with conversations about data privacy.
