Vaccine centre volunteer numbers fall in Perth and Kinross as restrictions ease and region opens up

Perth and Kinross Council is appealing for more volunteers to help at its vaccination centres.

It is understood the number of helpers at centres has declined as restrictions ease.

Conservative leader Murray Lyle has asked for more people to come forward.

In a video appeal he said: “The best way of defeating the COVID virus is by getting a vaccination.

“Over 50 per cent of the Perth and Kinross population have had two vaccinations and 80 per cent have had one vaccination.

“It’s critical we continue to vaccinate as many people as possible in as short a timescale as possible.”

He said the support from volunteers in running these centres was invaluable with 80 per cent of the workforce being volunteers.

He told residents: “We need your continued support to help with volunteers to progress this vaccination process as quickly as possible.”

There are three mass community vaccination centres in the region: Blairgowrie, Perth and Pitlochry.

Volunteers are required to do shifts of four or eight hours to support the work being done by both the council and NHS Tayside.

Conservative Carse of Gowrie councillor Angus Forbes has been volunteering at the vaccination centre in Blairgowrie Town Hall twice a week.

Cllr Forbes said: “It’s my small contribution to getting us out of the situation as quickly as possible and I would urge anyone to take part and give just a few hours to help the wider community.”

He added: “The numbers of people getting vaccinated is not going down but the number of volunteers is certainly going down as more restrictions are lifted and people have other things to do with their time.”
