Vaccine boost for GPs, nurses and over 70s as community programme to get underway

The community vaccination programme for over 70s is due to get under way on Monday in a major health boost for pensioners.

Meanwhile, up to 5,000 doses of the Moderna and AstraZeneca jab will be given to GPs and nurses over the weekend.

On Saturday, 1,800 second doses will be administered to general practitioners at four different centres, located in Dublin, Galway, Sligo and Portlaoise.

The same locations will see 3,000 first doses of the long-awaited AstraZeneca vaccine given to the group healthcare workers who didn't receive a jab in round one.

After this, 12,000 Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines will be given to GPs to deliver to those aged over 85 in the coming week, RTE News reports.

A further 8,400 Moderna jabs will be available for use later in the week, while 42,000 Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines will be made available in each of the two weeks that follow.

Health experts hope that all those aged over 85 will get their first jab in the next three weeks, with those aged 80-84 receiving theirs after.

A total of 79,500 vaccines are set to be given out in the coming week, in what would be the biggest number under the rollout plan to date.

A large number of nursing home residents, staff and other healthcare workers will also receive jabs over the next seven days.
