Vaccination sites launched, planned by 17 Japan prefectures

Seventeen prefectures, or slightly more than 30 % of all those across the nation, had set up their own COVID-19 vaccination sites or revealed plans to do so as of Monday, according to a tally by The Yomiuri Shimbun.

Of the 17 prefectures, Miyagi, Gunma, and Aichi started inoculations on Monday, using vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. Mass vaccinations conducted by the Self-Defense Forces have begun in Tokyo and Osaka.

Saitama Prefecture is planning to start vaccinations on June 1, while the prefectures of Kyoto and Osaka are scheduled to do so in mid-June.

Many municipalities in Tokyo are also conducting vaccinations. Hachioji started mass inoculations for the elderly in April, while Chiyoda Ward began on Monday.
