Future vaccination schedules may be affected as the number of general medical workers who are scheduled to be vaccinated from March is expected to increase by about 1 million from what was initially estimated, said Taro Kono, the minister in charge of administrative reform who is tasked with handling the vaccination rollout.

The government had estimated that about 3.7 million medical professionals nationwide would be vaccinated following the first vaccinations given to a certain number of front-line medical staff.

"It's likely to become much higher, by 1 million more," Kono said Thursday during a TBS TV program.

Kono also mentioned the need to simultaneously vaccinate medical workers and people 65 and over starting in April.
