Vaccination hub catches fire as people getting Covid jabs are evacuated from building

Firefighters tackled a blaze which broke out at a vaccination hub in Surrey.

People getting their jabs were evacuated from the Thames Ditton Emberbrook Community Health Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The fire service was called to the scene at just after 3.30pm, Surrey Live reports.

Photos show emergency crews tackling the blaze in the roof, where smoke is pouring out.

A witness at the scene said the power went out and everyone began to smell burning.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: "We were called to a fire at the Vaccination Hub in Emerbrook Community Centre, Thames Dutton at 3.33pm today.

"Six fire engines and the aerial ladder platform are in attendance.

"Everyone self evacuated & the fire is currently confined to the roof."

They added: "Our first fire engine was in attendance in just over 4 minutes.

"Our emergency team are working with @surrey_lrf regarding the impact on the vaccination hub."

Surrey Heartlands CCG said the centre was being used as a vaccination site at the time and that the vaccine supply has been secured.

It said: "We apologise to anyone who was booked in for their vaccination this afternoon, and wasn't able to receive it.

"The next vaccination clinic is due to run on Wednesday and we are hoping to be able to use an alternative location.

"We will contact people who are booked in to have their vaccinations this week as soon as arrangements are confirmed."

It said Glenlyn (Giggs Hill) Surgery, which is housed in the same building, is planning to operate as usual on Monday.

Emberbrook Community Health Centre is one among three other GP-led vaccination services in the Surrey Downs area - alongside Epsom Racecourse, Fitznells Manor Surgery in Ewell and Medwyn Surgery in Dorking.

SFRS has said its emergency team is working with Surrey's Local Resilience Forum (SLRF) regarding the impact on vaccinations being administered.

Investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire.
