Vaccinated or recovered: Time not yet right to socialize

NAGPUR: With fresh spike in cases in some pockets, doctors have slammed the recent trend of partying and socialising among citizens. The latest cases of people testing positive are believed to have history of attending celebrations in last one week.

A medical officer from the district health office and his family are admitted at AIIMS Nagpur after all of them tested positive. They had attended a marriage last week. The medical students who tested positive on Tuesday had apparently attended a gathering on the campus a couple of days.

Doctors said the medical fraternity is still not sure how the virus will behave. The ultimate preventive measure rests with the people, who need to rigorously follow Covid norms, they said.

Pulmonologist Dr Ashok Arbat, who is director of KRIMS Hospital, said last Friday they had a 65-year old Covid patient who had taken both doses. “He required five days of admission. On Saturday, one more got admitted. But both were not serious due to vaccination. The first one needed oxygen support though.

Hence, people must put off attending functions and ceremonies for some more time time. We have to limit socializing. There is also no clarity about the presence of antibodies,” said Dr Arbat.

Dr Harshwardha Bora, internal medicine expert at Kingsway Hospital, too said suddenly they have three Covid admissions. “All the citizens will have to follow Covid norms. Of course, the severity will be less among the vaccinated.

Some countries had withdrawn mask advisories, but then reimplemented it. We are also vaccinated but still using masks. Unless we shun such attitude, it will only be a matter of time before Covid spreads again like wild fire,” he said.

Pulmonologist Dr Ravindra Sarnaik, a district task force member, said, “Vaccination is no passport to luxury or breaking social behaviour meant for Covid prevention. Vaccine is only going to reduce severity of infection. Parties or gathering must be avoided as far as possible.”
