Vacant land in Glasgow's east end to be transformed into 'thriving business sector'

Vacant land in Glasgow’s east end has been awarded to a property investor who plans to transform the neighbourhood into a thriving business sector.

During the most recent contracts and property committee, held by the City Council, members agreed to dispose of the land at Dunn Street/Poplin Street to Clyde Gateway who intend to develop business units and offices.

Clyde Gateway is Scotland’s biggest and most ambitious regeneration programme. It is a partnership between Glasgow City Council, South Lanarkshire Council and Scottish Enterprise, backed by funding and direct support from the Scottish Government.

Their task, over a 20-year period until 2028, is to lead the way on achieving unparalleled social, economic and physical change across our communities over an area of 840 hectares in the east end of Glasgow and in Rutherglen.

During last Thursday’s meeting councillors were informed the disposal of land could help boost the economy in that area.

A council officer said: “The paper refers to the off market sale of three parcels of land to Clyde Gateway. They are essentially grass verges and will allow Clyde Gateway to complete their development.

“The land assembly will unlock the development which has planning consent for 62,000 square feet of business units. Hopefully we will see some business activity in the area in the not-too-distant future.”

Plans for the site also include industrial units and car parking for employees.

Chairman councillor Malcolm Balfour added: “That is good and hopefully it will bring some employment to the area as well.”

Members unanimously agreed to grant the paper.
