V&A's sold-out Christian Dior exhibition to run for seven extra weeks

The Christian Dior show at the V&A looks set to be the most popular in the museum’s history after it extended its sellout run for another seven weeks.

So far a total of 121,566 visitors have seen the blockbuster exhibition that sold out just 19 days after it opened on February 1.

Some 493,043 people saw its most-visited show, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, during its 21-week run in 2015 but the museum expects Dior to equal or surpass that with its extended run.

Christian Dior: Designer Of Dreams, best-known for his feminine “New Look” silhouette, will now continue until September 1.

Exhibits include dresses made for Princess Margaret on her 21st birthday, ballerina Margot Fonteyn and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence. Also on display are garments from the post-war Savoy show that made Dior’s name in England, as well as photographs, memorabilia and fashions created by the designers who took over the house after his death, including Yves Saint Laurent and John Galliano.

V&A director Tristram Hunt said: “We have been overwhelmed by the phenomenal visitor response to date.

“I would like to thank our visitors who have gone to such great lengths to see this extraordinary exhibition so far. I am delighted that we can extend the run, ensuring that as many people as possible have the chance to see it.” The success of the Dior show comes after the South Kensington institution logged record visitor numbers, with more than 4.4 million welcomed to its sites, including Blythe House and the Museum of Childhood, in 2018.

Tickets to Dior have gone on sale today through the V&A’s website, but more will be released on the 15th of every month for the next four weeks. A limited number will be available for sale at the museum from 10am every morning.
