UUP leader Steve Aiken suffers cracked ribs in a fall

Ulster Unionist leader Steve Aiken has thanked hospital staff for their care after he suffered cracked ribs in a fall.

The South Antrim MLA sustained the injury at the weekend.

Fellow assembly members have wished him well in his recovery.

Mr Aiken, who remained absent from the Assembly today, said "normal service" would resume shortly - but "via Zoom".

He wrote on Twitter: "Many thanks to the great staff at Antrim Hospital ED this weekend for putting me (gingerly) back on my feet after cracking a few ribs.

"Normal service (via Zoom) will be resumed shortly!!"

Mr Aiken had been due to take part in BBC programme Sunday Politics at the weekend as chair of the Assembly's finance committee.

The deputy chair, DUP MLA Paul Frew, appeared on the programme in his absence.

Speaking in the Assembly, Mr Frew wished Mr Aiken "all the best in his recovery".

He told MLAs: "He had a bit of a mishap so I'm sure I speak for all the people in this house that we wish him all the best in his recovery."

Alliance MLA Andrew Muir replied to Mr Aiken on Twitter.

He tweeted: "Sorry to hear Steve. Had just one broken rib a few years ago and pure agony. Hope you feel better soon."

SDLP MLA Sinéad Bradley also tweeted: "Take care Steve."
