'Utter garbage': Newcastle United fans react to dismal defeat at Aston Villa

'Appalling' and 'utter garbage' are just a couple of the phrases Newcastle United fans have used to describe the team's performance at Villa Park.

The Magpies were looking for their third consecutive victory in the Premier League on Monday, and three points would have lifted Steve Bruce's side into the top half.

But United rarely threatened at Villa, and were undone by two set-pieces in quick succession in the first half.

Conor Hourihane's whipped effort gave the hosts the lead, and his delivery teed-up Anwar El Ghazi for a tap-in minutes later.

Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle were introduced in the second half as Bruce changed the Magpies' shape in an attempt to pull themselves back into the game.

The visitors made a bright start following the break, but normal service quickly resumed as Villa could and should have added to their lead and put the game beyond doubt.

Here's how United fans reacted to the dreadful display at Villa Park on social media:

ASM and Dubravka?

'Hopeless' Almiron

'Utter garbage'

Drop Shelvey?

'Schar must play'

'Appalling result'

'Receipt' for Joelinton
