'Utter disgrace' - Fire engine 'obstructed' by irresponsibly parked cars in southside

A resident has hit out after claiming a fire engine was obstructed by cars parked in the middle of the road in the southside.

An image shared online shows an engine alongside four cars sitting over white hatched markings on Tantallon Road.

Sarah, who lives on the street, was alerted to the incident at around 7:30am after hearing the sirens blaring "for several minutes" outside of her home.

She told Glasgow Live: "Cars are always parked in the middle of this road, especially in the evenings. It's been a problem since I moved here over a year ago. I don't drive but i know it's not supposed to happen.

"They had the sirens on very lightly at the start. I heard them out my window and it kept going, so I looked out.

Fire crews were called to tackle the blaze in the early hours of the morning (Scottish Fire & Rescue Service)

"I've been told that the fire service have the authority to ram past cars in an emergency, so I assume they were just passing through but wanting to highlight the problem.

"They got past eventually. I was was away from the window for about 15 minutes and I saw three firefighters getting back in the truck. They must have guided it through."

The post drew a fury of comments from locals in a private community group on Facebook.

One resident claimed she had witnessed refuse collection and other emergency crews experiencing issues passing through the street over a few years.

She added: "I hope the drivers see this photo. They should have consideration and park with more care. It caused a huge delay in the fire services getting through which could have serious consequences for human lives if they can't get there on time to save them."

A spokesman for the council said: “Drivers have a basic responsibility to observe the road regulations at all times. Ensuring access for emergency services vehicles is a key objective of the road regulations. Drivers who fail to observe the road regulations can be liable for a criminal offence.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed they attended an incident this morning which was a "false alarm."
