CHANDIGARH: After a disappointing outing in their Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign opener against Kerala, Chandigarh put up a much improved performance against Uttarakhand on Thursday before narrowly going down by three wickets in Rajkot.
Put in to bat, the UT side rode on belligerent half centuries from opener Sarul Kanwar and Ankit Kaushik, besides a much improved show from the middle order to post a competitive 269/9 in their 50 overs. Sarul fell shy of a century by three runs after facing 98 balls and striking 10 fours and four sixes, Ankit slammed a 52-ball 55, laced with six boundaries and a six. Wicketkeeper-bat Arpit Pannu also contributed with 46 runs, while all-rounder Gurinder Singh came up with a handy 34-ball 30 to guide the side to a healthy score.
In reply, Uttarakhand banked on half centuries from the opening combo of skipper Jay Bista (68) and Kamal Singh (59) to get to the total after losing seven wickets and with four balls to spare. For Chandigarh, left-arm spinner Yuvraj Chaudhary returned with three wickets, while pacer Sandeep Sharma picked a couple of wickets.
