Uttarakhand: Landour market in Mussoorie to be developed as 'heritage market'

MUSSOORIE: The Landour market of Mussoorie, established in the early 19th century, will be developed as a "heritage market" by the Mussoorie Municipal Corporation (MMC). A new parking lot, also constructed by the MMC, was inaugurated in Landour on Wednesday.

"This market was established during British colonial rule and it is the first market to come up in Mussoorie. We will develop the Landour market as a heritage market. Façade improvement, cobbling of roads and proper lighting would be some of the steps taken in this regard. Our aim is also to increase tourist footfall in Landour," said Anuj Gupta, chairman of MMC.

According to MMC officials, a total of Rs 1 crore has been earmarked for this project in the first phase for the shops near Landour Chowk.

A parking lot in Landour with a reported capacity of 60 four-wheelers and 500 two-wheelers was also inaugurated on Wednesday.

"This is the first parking lot developed in Mussoorie by MMC. In the coming year, we shall develop a few more to reduce traffic bottlenecks in the town," Gupta said.

Meanwhile, residents of Landour said that the development of the heritage market would help in boosting tourism at Landour.

"This move will result in attracting tourists to Landour, which would benefit the local businesses here. The new parking lot constructed here would help in reducing traffic woes in the area," said Mohan Lal Aggarwal, a senior citizen who inaugurated the parking lot.
