BAREILLY: A young unmarried couple in their early 20s died by suicide in UP’s Shahjahanpur district on Saturday after their families refused to give their nod for marriage despite repeated attempts to convince them.
The girl, Pooja Devi (20), consumed poison after she was locked up in the house and was rushed to the hospital where she died during treatment. After getting this news, her boyfriend Avnish Kumar (22) hanged himself. Their bodies were handed over to police after a postmortem on Sunday, the police said.
Avnish and Pooja were in a relationship since 2018. The boy, a resident of Tilhar, changed his school and shifted near Shahjahanpur city for his girlfriend.
SHO Sadar Bazar police station, Dharmendra Kumar said, “No complaint has been lodged by the family members. We did not suspect foul-play in the postmortem report.”
Notably, at least 28 cases of couple suicides have been reported in Bareilly region since 2019. Four such incidents have taken place in UP in the past 30 days.
