LUCKNOW: Sleuths of Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (UPSTF) nabbed a man who posed as an IPS of Maharashtra cadre and duped a jeweller of Rs 3.17 crore.
The accused is identified as Rajiv Singh of Aliganj, who was arrested from his residence.
Cops also recovered 5.73 kg gold from his possession worth Rs 3 crore.
Vishal Singh, ASP, STF, who led the probe, said that Rajiv Singh used to keep a card with insignia of Maharashtra police with DCP crime branch inscribed on it and used to call himself an IPS of 2014 batch.
"He got in contact with a prominent city jeweller and purchased jewellery worth Rs 3.19 crore on July 13, and gave post-dated cheques," said ASP.
Later, the accused asked not to get the cheques encashed and further delayed the payment.
"When the owner objected, he threatened him with dire consequences claiming himself to be an IPS," said ASP Singh.
The officer also said that Rajiv Singh was son of a retired police inspector and an MA political science pass out who wanted to become an IPS.
