Uttar Pradesh: Salesman beaten to death for refusing free booze in Gorakhpur

GORAKHPUR: A salesman working at a liquor store in Ramgarh Tal in the city was allegedly beaten to death by a group of men after he refused to give them complementary booze on Thursday evening. Police have initiated probe and registered a case of murder against the accused, identified as the brother of a historysheeter Pankaj Rai, and other 14-15 unidentified people.

Following the incident, the SSP transferred the circle officer and attached the inspector in charge of the local police station to the police line.

Pankaj Rai is former student union president of DAV Degree College. Criminal cases against him have been registered at several police stations of the district.

As per police, the incident took place after the victim Manish Prajapati (25) asked for payment from four people who came to the model shop in Budh Vihar area under Ramgarh Tal police station limits. They refused to pay while one of them said that he was the brother of the history-sheeter Pankaj Rai and left.

They, however, returned along with 14-15 more people and began beating Prajapati. In the middle of the incident, another waiter Ram Nath Yadav, aka Raghu, a native of Bahraich, was also beaten up by the same men when he tried to stop the brawl. Both were rushed to the hospital, where Manish died during treatment late on Thursday night, while Raghu who was severely injured is undergoing treatment at BRD Medical College. His condition is stated to be out of danger.

“The clash broke out over a money transaction. Three teams have been constituted and a case of murder has been registered against the accused and other unidentified people. With the help of CCTV footage, the police and the forensic team have gathered all the evidence. The case will be soon resolved and legal action will be taken against the culprit," said Sonam Kumar, SP city.

Ramgarh Tal police station SHO KK Rana is attached with the police line. He took charge on Wednesday after the previous SHO JN Singh was suspended in connection with Kanpur trader Manish Gupta death. SWAT team in charge Sushil Shukla has taken over as the new SHO of Ramgarh Tal police station. Circle officer, Cantt, Rahul Bhati has been transferred to Bansgaon circle. Bansgain CO, Shyam Dev, got the charge of Cantt circle.
